PROGRAM OF THE 2 DAY EXCURSION TO KSAR GHILANE

Day 1: From Djerba to Ksar Ghilane and Night in the Desert

Pick Up Djerba

We will pick you up in front of your place of stay in Djerba at 7:30 a.m.
 

You will take the legendary Roman road which connects the island to the continent.
 

Then you will cross olive groves, surrounded by fascinating semi-desert landscapes.
 

Flexible photo stops are planned to immortalize these exceptional panoramas.

Sebkhet el Melah Salt Lake

First stop at Sebkhet el Melah or Zarzis Lake, a salt lake renowned for its changing hues, a treat for photography enthusiasts.

Visit Tataouine and Ksar Ouled Soltane

  • Passage through the Tataouine market (according to opening hours).
     

  • Exploring Ksar Ouled Soltane, a famous Star Wars setting, used as a slave quarter on Tatooine in The Phantom Menace.

Lunch at Guermassa or at Ksar Hadada and Visit Chenini

  • Lunch at a local restaurant at Guermassa or at Ksar Hadada.
     

  • Guided tour of Chenini, where the stone houses blend into the mountain.

Departure for Ksar Ghilane

The entrance into the sand desert marks the beginning of the adventure in Ksar Ghilane. Here you can choose:
 

  • A camel ride in the desert: €15/hour.
     

  • A quad bike ride to the ancient Roman fort of Tisavar: €30/hour.
     

  • Or enjoy a swim in the natural hot spring which gushes out at 32°c.
     

These optional activities will be payable to local service providers without reservations.

The Saharan Camp

At the end of the day, departure by 4x4 towards the Saharan camp, located 20 km into the desert.
 

  • Installation and relaxation.
     

  • Demonstration of baking bread in the sand.
     

  • Tasty dinner followed by a walk in the dunes to admire the starry sky.
     

  • Overnight stay in a comfortable private tent.

Day 2: From Ksar Ghilane to Matmata and Return to Djerba

Breakfast in the Desert

Start the day with breakfast in the great outdoors, followed by free time to explore the dunes.

Matmata and Tamezret

Drive to Matmata, famous for its troglodyte houses, used as a setting for Luke Skywalker's house in Star Wars.

Lunch at a local's home in Tamezret, where you will discover warm Berber hospitality.

Back to Djerba

After these two days of adventures and discoveries, return to Djerba at the end of the afternoon, where you will be dropped off in front of your place of stay.

Sites Visited:

  1. Sebkhet el Melah: Salt lake with changing colors, ideal for photographers.
     

  2. Ksar Ouled Soltane: Iconic Star Wars setting, one of the best-preserved ksars in Tunisia.
     

  3. Chenini: Perched Berber village with a breathtaking panoramic view.
     

  4. Ksar Hadada: A ksar used as a setting for the Star Wars films.
     

  5. Ksar Ghilane: Gateway to the desert, where the rocky landscape transforms into golden dunes.
     

  6. Matmata: Unique troglodyte houses and famous film set.
     

  7. Tamezret: A very beautiful Berber village.

To be expected:

  • Necessary and towel.
     

  • Sunscreen.
     

  • Hat or cap.
     

  • Pair of sunglasses.
     

  • Scarf or shawl for the quad.
     

  • Swimsuits.
     

  • Camera.
     

  • Some cash for personal expenses.

Regarding equipment, you should plan in a bag (it's better for sand):
 

  • A flashlight or headlamp, as well as towels (not provided at the Saharan camp).
     

  • For the evening, in winter, bring warm clothes because it can be very cool at this time of year.
     

  • If you are sensitive to the cold, for camping we recommend sports tracksuits for sleeping and if you need to go out at night.
     

  • Blankets, pillows and sheets are provided at the campsite.
