STAR WARS CIRCUIT DEPARTING FROM GABÈS
THREE-DAY TOUR

The inspiration of Star Wars: Tataouine and its Ksour
Did you know that the fantastic universe of Star Wars was inspired by Tunisian landscapes to bring some of its most iconic settings to life?

Indeed, the city of Tataouine and its surrounding ksour greatly inspired George Lucas, the creator of Star Wars.
It is even the name of this city that gave birth to Tatooine, the famous desert planet of the saga.

It's important to note that Tataouine did not directly serve as a filming location for the first Star Wars trilogy, and saw little use for the more recent 2000s trilogy.

On the other hand, the filming of the films was spread over different locations in southern Tunisia, notably in Tozeur, Tataouine and even on the island of Djerba.

Among the most notable places are the Ksar Medenine and Ksar Ouled Soltane, which provided authentic settings for the filming of Star Wars films. The Ksar Medenine, located in town, and the Ksar Hadada served as the backdrop for the slave quarters of Mos Espa.

Two scenes were filmed there: the arrival at Anakin's house during the storm and Anakin's departure with Qui-Gon, when he bids farewell to Shmi.

Tunisia's incredible Star Wars legacy continues to fascinate fans around the world, who come to visit these sites to relive key moments from the saga.
By visiting them, you will have the chance to immerse yourself in the Star Wars universe while discovering Tunisian history and culture.

The Unforgettable Star Wars Scenery in Tunisia.

Ksar Ouled Soltane:
Recognizable among a thousand, Ksar Ouled Soltane is a fortified Berber village that was transformed into the slave quarter of Tatooine by George Lucas.
Remarkably preserved, this ksar is one of the most beautiful in the country and remains an unknown gem for many tourists.

Ksar Hadada:
Ksar Hadada also served as the backdrop for the Mos Espa slave quarters.
This is where the memorable scene was filmed where Qui-Gon Jinn contacts Obi-Wan Kenobi to ask him to analyze the level of midichlorians in the blood taken from Anakin, as well as the one where Shmi, Anakin's mother, reveals that her son has no father.

Matmata and Uncle Owen's house:
Matmata is a unique destination, famous for its cave dwellings. These accommodations, rudimentary but fascinating, are either underground or dug into the mountainside.
Thanks to their construction in the rock, they offer a cool space despite the intense outside heat.

It was in Matmata that the Hotel Sidi Driss served as the setting for Uncle Owen's house, in 1976 and then in 2000.

Still in operation, the Hotel Sidi Driss welcomes fans for tours, offering a privileged look at the legacy of Star Wars.

The hotel is divided into five courtyards, the fifth of which bears the evocative name "Star Wars courtyard". This is where the Lars' dining room and the main courtyard of the house were filmed.

The dining room's painted ceiling, restored for the filming of Episode II (14 years after the filming of Episode IV!), is still in perfect condition. Looking at it, you really feel like you're in the movie!

Must-See Star Wars Filming Locations in Tunisia

Sidi Bouhlel:
This magnificent canyon served as the backdrop for the Jundland Desert.
It is here that Luke and C3PO find R2D2 before being attacked by the Sand Men, the Tuskens, and saved by Uncle Ben.
In Episode I, it is from the cliffs of this canyon that the Tuskens ambushed fire during the pod run.
The Canyon of Sidi Bouhlel is an incredibly beautiful natural landscape that is worth seeing even outside of the Star Wars context.

Chott el-Gharsa:
Chott el-Gharsa is home to an entire neighborhood of Mos Espa, the Tatooine village where Anakin works in Episode I.
This setting, entirely created for the saga, is located in the middle of the sand desert.
In episode I, we see Qui-Gon Jinn, Padme and Jar Jar Binks strolling the streets, and Jar Jar binks tempted by food stalls in the Mos Espa market.
In episode II, we find these sets during Anakin's visit to Watto.
